Safe Night Precinct Support Services

Townsville & Airlie Beach

Safe Night Precinct Support Services identifies vulnerable people and potential safety issues, with the aim of supporting the safety and wellbeing of patrons, reducing alcohol and drug related harm, and assisting vulnerable people during peak times.

The Rest and Recovery service increases the safety and wellbeing of vulnerable people by:

  • Providing rest and recovery services for people who are intoxicated or otherwise vulnerable
  • Seeking assistance for people who may be at risk of harm to themselves or others
  • Supporting vulnerable individuals to safely reconnect with friends, family, transport, accommodation,
    or emergency services where required.

The service is staffed by qualified and experienced workers who provide support, harm minimisation, and risk management strategies to ensure the safety of both patrons and staff.

The service provides the following supports to intoxicated and/or vulnerable people:

  • A safe place where vulnerable individuals can rest and recover
  • Water
  • Appropriate first aid, where required
  • Referral to services including Queensland Ambulance Service, Queensland Police Service, hospitals, accommodation providers, Child Safety, and sexual assault support services
  • Precinct information including taxi ranks, transport options, and public amenities
  • Social connection support including access to mobile phones, charging facilities, and assistance contacting friends or family
  • Advocacy and support to assist people to access services and supports safely
  • Outreach support throughout the Safe Night Precinct for vulnerable patrons requiring assistance

Safe Night Townsville – The Safe Night Precinct Support Service operates on Friday and Saturday nights from 10:30 pm – 3:30 am, 52 weeks of the year and has the capacity to cater for six special event nights to be decided upon by the Drink Safe Committee.

Safe Night Airlie Beach – Rest and Recovery Services operate within the Airlie Beach Safe Night Precinct and surrounding entertainment areas during peak times.

The service operates Friday 11:30 pm to 3:30 am and Saturday nights 11:30 pm to 3:00 am, 52 weeks of the year, with additional coverage provided during major local events and peak tourism periods where required.
