St Margaret’s House for Young Women
St Margaret’s House for Young Women (St Margaret’s) is dedicated to supporting young women who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, helping them achieve stability in their living arrangements. The service fosters a safe and respectful environment, addressing the specific needs identified by young women in areas such as income, housing, health, relationships, legal matters, education, and employment.
With a focus on young women aged 16 to 25, St Margaret’s primarily supports those experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless. In certain cases, referrals may be accepted for clients younger than school-leaving age, though this is not the primary focus.
Funded as a supported accommodation service, St Margaret’s provides immediate assistance to young women experiencing homelessness through comprehensive case management and support in temporary living situations while transitioning to more permanent housing. The aim is to address clients’ immediate personal needs and facilitate their journey towards stable, long-term accommodation as quickly as possible.
The following support services are offered within a social justice framework:
- 24-hour access to the service
- Basic necessities and day-to-day support
- Assistance in finding stable long-term accommodation
- Advocacy and referrals to various organisations, including those focused on housing, income support, education, employment, health, legal aid, and family support services
St Margaret’s also emphasises the development of essential life skills, including:
- Cooking
- Budgeting
- Nutrition and health
- Personal development in areas such as self-awareness, self-esteem, self-care, problem-solving, and conflict resolution
- Support for families and former residents
St Margaret’s operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year.
